چکیده
BACKGROUND In our previous study, significantly higher antioxidant enzymes and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in patients with premature ejaculation (PE) compared to healthy controls were found. In the present study, we planned to evaluate antioxidant enzymes and MDA levels of patients with PE before and after citalopram treatment. METHODS The study comprised 30 patients with PE according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fourth Version (DSM-IV) and 30 healthy controls. The patients were randomly assigned to two groups. Fifteen of them (group I) received 8 weeks of citalopram treatment but the remaining (group II) did not. The subjects were asked to determine the average intravaginal ejaculation latency time (IVELT). The fasting antioxidant enzymes and MDA levels were measured at baseline and after 8 weeks. RESULTS No statistically significant difference in the mean IVELT between groups at baseline was found. IVELT considerably elevated after 8 weeks of citalopram treatment in group I with a mean of 209 +/- 72.1 seconds but not in group II. Antioxidant enzymes and MDA levels did not differ between groups at baseline. At the evaluation of week 8, SOD, GSH-Px, and MDA levels significantly reduced during treatment in group I patients. CONCLUSION In conclusion, the results suggest that the ability for antioxidant enzymes and MDA to normalize through symptom alleviation reveals that they might be trait marker of PE. Further placebo-controlled studies are needed.

Pre and post chemotherapy evaluation of breast cancer patients: Biochemical approach of serum selenium and antioxidant enzymes
Backgrounds: Chemotherapy for treatment of breast cancer uses some drugs to target and destroy the cancer cells. However, most of antineoplastic treatments are non-specific and the innate cells will be damaged. In this study, the effect of Adriamycin/Cytoxan (AC) chemotherapy on status of antioxidant enzymes and Se levels in breast cancer patients was evaluated. Methods: A prospective study, i...

Background: Many chemotherapeutic regimens used in the treatment of cancer generate free radicals that may be a part of their beneficial effects. The aim of this study was to assess the oxidative status in patients undergoing chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukemia (AML). متن کاملEffects of Three Types of Massage on Serum Levels of Malondialdehyde, Superoxide Dismutase and Glutathione Peroxidase after One Session of Exhaustive Exercise in Female Futsal Players
Objective: The production of reactive oxygen species in exercise causes oxidative stress which disturbs the balance of oxidants and antioxidants, causing destructive effects on cells. The present study aims to investigate the effect of three types of massage (Swedish, Russian, Thai) on serum levels of Malondialdehyde (MDA), Glutathione Peroxidase (GPX) and Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) following o...
متن کاملThe effect of short-term colostrum supplementation on serum malondialdehyde levels and total antioxidant capacity due to acute resistance in healthy men
Background &aim:During intense exercise reactive species produce oxygen that results in cell damage. It seems that the use of antioxidant supplements reduces the oxidative stress caused by such exercises. Therefore the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of short-term colostrum supplementation on serum malondialdehyde levels and total antioxidant capacity induced by acute resist...
